Design Process

Learn about how to get started with your project. The Design Center Director is available for consultation. Even if you’re not sure what you want to make, reach out to learn more about all the possibilities.

  1. Make an Appointment with Design Center Director (Sara Rosenstock)

    • Visit calendly.com/sararosenstock to choose a time that works with your schedule. If you have drawings or digital files, bring them. If you don’t, don’t worry we can discuss your options.

    • During this meeting, you will choose materials to use and will be provided an invoice for the cost of materials.

  2. Make a Payment

    • Visit the Business Office Cashier Window
      Irvine (2nd Floor)
      Monday–Friday from 9am–5pm

    • Provide the Invoice given to you and pay with Cash, Check or Credit Card.

    • Return your Paid Invoice/Receipt to the Design Center Director.

  3. Make Something!

Depending on the project, you may not need to be present while the project is being made. The Director will tell you how long the process will take and you can decide whether you want to see the machines in action!

Cost

  • Students are charged for materials only unless the materials are incorporated into a class fee (then there is no charge)

  • Employees are charged for materials or labor (when materials are provided by employees). The labor is $15 an hour. This charge directly benefits the Design Center and subsidizes the cost of materials.

Get Inspired!

Are you unsure about what you can make? You should search for “laser cut files” or “laser cut projects” to see what the machine is capable of. Browsing websites is also a great place to get inspired by other makers.
