The Marietta College Art Department is pleased to present Subtle & Bold, a solo exhibition with woodcut prints by Meryl Engler. The show will be on display in Gallery 310, August 26 through November 20, 2026, with an artists’ reception on Friday, September 25 from 4:00 to 5:30pm, including a gallery talk at 4:30.
Meryl Engler is a California native who currently lives and works in Akron, Ohio. Her solo exhibition at Gallery 310 features fourteen woodcut prints, many of them large-scale. Engler received her MFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where she developed her passion for colorful woodcut prints. She has an extensive exhibition record, with shows in Lincoln, Syracuse, Los Angeles, Houston, and internationally. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Rubber City Prints and an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Akron.
Engler describes her work as follows: “I like to say that my strokes are strong and big and powerful because I am strong and big and powerful. But woodcut also requires a level of intimacy and care in carving each mark. There is a level of trust that must be achieved with the material and in oneself. The marks and colors can interact in delicate ways. The resulting work is physical, subtle, and bold. Carving and printing become completely cathartic acts.”
Gallery 310 is located on the third floor of the Hermann Fine Arts Center at Marietta College. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 9am to 3pm, or by appointment at powelll@marietta.edu Gallery 310 observes all Marietta College holidays and breaks. All exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.
Gallery 310 at Marietta College aims to present diverse and stimulating exhibitions, which will enrich the artistic culture and education of the campus, community, and region. Gallery 310 supports teaching, learning, and exploration of the liberal arts through rotating exhibitions and related programs. The Gallery intends to showcase pieces from Marietta College’s permanent collection, as well as borrowed works from emerging and established artists.
Gallery 310 is a place for intellectual curiosity, shared programming with the greater campus community, and a teaching space for students looking to enhance their experience for future careers in the gallery and museum-related fields.
