Studio Art

The Studio Art program at Marietta College trains the mind for critical thinking and creative problem-solving through the investigation of the visual arts, history, and culture.

Drawings

The Art Department teaches a variety of drawing courses. We focus on developing the individual student’s a drawing ability in a very structured and accessible manner. Many of our students start the class with minimal experience or confidence in drawing, but by the end they become confident in their abilities. We highlight each student’s growth by having them compare the first drawing they did (on the first day of class, with no instruction) and their final drawing project—it is very obvious how much they have improved!

Social Masks • ART 203: Flat & Solid Design

Students were instructed to design a mask that represents their alter-ego (a person’s secondary or alternative personality) or the side of themselves that they might aim to ‘present to the world’ (either through Social Media or another platform).   Each mask was  composed of at least 4 layers- 3 of which were precisely cut using the Glowforge Pro® Laser Cutter.  The remaining layers were constructed using mixed media (acetate, tinfoil, tracing paper, found/recycled objects etc).  Students were also instructed to utilize a limited monochromatic or analogous color palette to construct their vision

Puppet Portrait • ART 102: Drawing 2

This project was created as a secondary assignment for students to complete alongside figure/anatomy studies in Drawing 2. Students were instructed to create a Self-Portrait Puppet that loosely referenced traditional proportions and included personalized and/or fantasy elements.

Paintings

We offer oil paint classes to provide students the opportunity to learn the craft, as well as how to develop concepts. Our students are encouraged to experiment with different mediums as they develop their own way of image making.

Printmaking

Our printmaking course introduces students to block printing, monoprints and serigraphy (silk-screen). Exposure to these processes are the perfect gateway for students to explore alternative methods of image making and it often directly informs their work, whether in a painting, photograph or digital design.
